Calm Ball (also known in English as a “calm ball” or, in some cases, a “stress relief ball”) is essentially a type of psychotherapeutic and calming tool that has been used over time in various cultures and for different purposes.
The earliest known examples of calm balls date back to the 14th century in China. These balls, known as Baoding balls, were made of metal and used in pairs, held in the palm of the hand. By rotating them in the hand, one could activate and circulate Qi (energy) throughout the body. The Chinese believed these balls helped improve concentration, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being.
Reducing stress and anxiety:
Squeezing the ball helps release muscle tension and shifts mental focus from worry to physical action.
Breathing exercises and meditation:
In yoga or meditation, some people use the calm ball to aid concentration, especially when coordinating hand movement with breathing.
Physical rehabilitation:
Physiotherapists use soft balls to strengthen hand, finger, and wrist muscles, especially after injury or surgery.
Educational aid for children with attention disorders or autism:
The calm ball can help children who need sensory stimulation focus better on their lessons.
Mental aid in the workplace:
In office environments, using a calm ball can help individuals relax their minds during moments of fatigue or work-related stress.
